Join David Whyte on the Nakasendo Trail, walking through the mountain sides, ancient landscapes and villages of central Japan, following the footsteps of Japan's most famous poet, Bashō. This tour begins in Kyoto, stopping  at several towns along the way, staying at both traditional Ryokan Inns, and more modern western-style hotels and culminating in the city of Tokyo.  We will have the opportunity to visit hot springs, temples and shrines along the remote forest paths and tiny hamlets within the Japanese countryside.

APPLICATION PROCESS

We do not accept participants on a first come, first served basis.  Once you submit your application, you will be added to our waitlist while we review your application. If you are invited to join the tour, you will be notified by email, and we will take the deposit $4,950 USD with the final payment of $4,950 USD due 60 days after the deposit is charged to your credit card.

If you have not received an email indicating your acceptance by January 5th, 2027, your application will remain on our waitlist.  If a spot opens up for you, we will contact you by email to confirm your availability at that time.

We make every effort to ensure our group emails make it past increasingly vigilant spam filtering; however, this is not always foolproof.  Please add [email protected] to your contacts and check your spam or junk folders regularly.

ACCOMMODATIONS

For details regarding the traditional Ryokans accommodations, see the Japan tour details page.  In keeping with tradition, all rooms are shared by two participants. Bathrooms are most often communal, but always segregated by gender.  If you are traveling alone, we will assign you a roommate based on gender.

COST OF THE TOUR

The cost to join the tour is $9,900 USD per person. This fee covers the cost of accommodation for seven nights, travel within Japan during the tour, all breakfasts and either lunch or dinner each day. Airfare is not included, and you will need to make your way to the hotel in Kyoto where the group will be meeting on the first afternoon.

PAYMENT SCHEDULE

We only accept payment via credit card.  Upon acceptance of your application, your credit card will be charged the full deposit and final payment amounts as specified below.
